Upcoming Academic Year Cost

Estimating Upcoming Academic Year Cost of Attendance
In estimating cost of attendance for an upcoming academic year, please refer to the costs that are listed for the current/last academic year under the categories of Undergraduate, Graduate/Professional, Certificate Programs, and Part-Time Classroom Studies. Costs for an upcoming academic year are updated and posted after estimated budgets for books and supplies, food and housing, and personal expenses/transportation are determined by the University (around April) AND again, if necessary, after the legislature sets the final costs for tuition and fees (typically late summer).

Standardized Budget Allowances for Determining Aid Eligibility
The costs have been developed as guides to help students anticipate their costs at UNC Chapel Hill. Some students will spend more than the typical amounts, others less, depending on individual lifestyles and circumstances. A student’s eligibility for financial aid, however, will not be based on individual preferences and spending habits, but on the standard budget allowances.

Breakdown of the Budget - Four Components

  Tuition and Fees
Books and Supplies
Food and Housing
Personal expenses/transportation

The North Carolina Legislature typically sets the costs for tuition and fees during the late summer months for the upcoming academic year. Beyond tuition and fees, students need to allow for books and supplies as estimated, and personal expenses that represent reasonable allowances for the nine-month academic year. Food and housing costs reflect typical amounts for students living on-campus and should be adequate for off-campus residents if reasonably priced accommodations are selected. Students have choices about where they live while attending UNC: at home with parents or relatives, on campus in a residence hall or an apartment, or in an off-campus apartment.
