Funding for an education at UNC-Chapel Hill is available from federal, state, University and private resources. To receive federal, state and many University-sponsored sources of funding, one must apply and qualify for financial aid. Other sources, local, private and institutional, are awarded on the basis of other criteria, particularly academic achievement.

Financial Aid at UNC-Chapel Hill consists of the following: |
SCHOLARSHIPS—"gift money" that is awarded on the basis of academic achievement (merit-based scholarships) or a combination of academic performance and financial need. |
GRANTS—"gift money" from federal, state and University funds that are awarded based on financial need. |
JOBS—money one can earn through Federal Work-Study on campus, in community service agencies, or off-campus jobs. |
LOANS—money one can borrow from University loan programs, federal loan programs, and outside lenders. Financial aid administrators are required to follow a code of conduct pertaining to student loans. View UNC-CH's Student Loan Code of Conduct here.

"Outside" Scholarships and Aid includes any funding such as scholarships, grants, and benefits that is awarded directly to a student by any non-school affiliates, businesses, organizations, groups, or individuals. "Outside" aid can be based on a variety of criteria including academic merit, financial need, community service, area of study, organization to which the student and/or parents belong, place of residence or employment, and ethnic or religious background. Often "outside" aid may be applied to any college or university, including UNC-Chapel Hill. It is important to note that "outside" sources of funding may affect the amount of need-based financial aid you are allowed to receive in your total financial aid award package. If you receive "outside" scholarships or aid, you must submit our "Outside Scholarships and Resources Reporting Form" form to the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid.
