Outside Scholarships

Outside scholarships include any funding from sources other than UNC, the N.C. State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA), or the federal government.

Examples include awards from companies, foundations, civic and religious organizations, and employer tuition benefits. These awards must be reported to the Office of Scholarships and Student Aid, since they can affect a student’s aid eligibility.

Outside scholarships help to meet a student’s financial need, so we have to take them into account when calculating need-based aid. If an outside scholarship helps meet your demonstrated need, we may make changes to your other aid, starting with any loans or work-study funding.

State and federal regulations require us to make those calculations, so we appreciate your help in reporting outside sources of funding.
