Johnston Scholarship

Johnston Scholarship

The James M. Johnston Scholarship was established in 1969 by the James M. Johnston Trust and is awarded to students who have outstanding academic achievement and financial need. The initial scholarships were awarded in the 1970-71 academic year. Mr. Johnston was born near Chapel Hill and was a UNC alumnus who made a fortune as an investment banker in Washington. He died in 1967. He was a WWI fighter pilot, a long-time part-owner of the Washington Senators baseball team, one of Washington’s top amateur golfers and an expert at bridge. Johnston Scholars are automatically invited to join the UNC Scholars. The Johnston Scholarship was the first scholarship at UNC to provide faculty mentoring and programming, and the UNC Scholars Program has its origins there.
